Een jaar en drie maanden zat Klaas Wierema (84) in dienst op Nieuw-Guinea. Hij wilde wel naar het buitenland, want hij hoorde dat Curaçao en Suriname heerlijke warme landen waren. Als onbezonnen tiener kwam hij in Azië terecht. „Ik kende het hele land niet!” Woensdag ontving hij het Nieuw-Guinea Herinneringskruis.
