De zaak kwam aan het rollen nadat Dierenwelzijnsorganisatie House of Animals aan de bel trok. De organisatie doet zelfstandig onderzoek naar dierenleed en bekijkt onder andere onlineadvertenties. De verdachten gebruikten meerdere gebruikersnamen op voornamelijk Marktplaats voor hun verkoop.
