Door de thuisnederlaag tegen NEC beleeft Feyenoord de slechtste seizoensstart in negentien jaar. Nog net iets beroerder ging het in het desastreuze seizoen 1989-1990, toen na vijf duels slechts één puntje was binnengehaald. Er zijn twee frappante overeenkomsten. Zowel nu als toen heeft Feyenoord een hoofdsponsor, die zwaar in de problemen zit (Fortis/HCS), terwijl de valse start in beide gevallen onder het bewind van een Verbeek plaatsvond (Gertjan/Pim).
