Alan Shearer has posited a theory on why the Football Association (FA) hastily moved to appoint Thomas Tuchel as the next England manager. Tuchel, formerly a Chelsea boss, will be the third non-English manager of the England team, following an 18-month contract agreement.
Shearer suggested that the FA was rather compelled to act quickly to not lose Tuchel to another role, with rumours that he was a top candidate to take over as manager for Manchester United due to increasing pressure on Erik ten Hag.
Is Tuchel a good choice for England?
Both Shearer and Gary Lineker, discussing on the Rest is Football podcast, shared sentiments about the speed of the deal since talks between the FA and Tuchel had accelerated recently. Lineker added that the timing is somehow odd, as Tuchel isn't expected to take over until the start of next year.
Shearer said, "They [the FA] have looked at whoever and come up with Thomas Tuchel and thought there is a real live chance he could get the Man United job pretty soon. If they didn't act quick, now, they weren't going to get one of the outstanding candidates for the England job."
Tuchel's links to Man United grew stronger following the Red Devils' worst start to a Premier League season – securing eight points from their opening seven matches. Lineker also pointed out that Tuchel was not expected to take over as England boss until next year, with Lee Carsley remaining in charge for the upcoming matches with Greece and the Republic of Ireland.
